Different Students, Subjects and Strategies

One thing Ive learnt through tutoring is that there is no single teaching method that works for every student. The strategies I use depend on my students age, confidence, learning style and subject!

With younger maths students, I focus on making concepts visual and create. Rather, than simply explaining a rule, i use drawings, number ilnes, diagrams and real life examples to help them understand why something works. I also break questions into smaller steps and use repetition to build confidence.Younger students often benefit from shorter activities and plemty o opportunities to practise a skill before moving on.

With older maths students, my approach becomes more focused on independence and problem solving. Instead of immediately showing them how to answer a question, i might ask what could we do first, anything you want to try first. This encourages students to develop stratefies they can use independetly in exams. I also focus more heavilu on identifying recurring mistakes, exam tehcnique and showing clear working.

English tutoring again, required a siddferent approach again. There is rarely one "correct" way to interepte a test, so disucssion becomes an importsnt teaching tool. With yougner students I use questioning to develop compregension, vocab ad the ability to find evidence in a test. Rather than accepting a one word answer, i encourage them to explain why they think something.

For older English students, i focus on developing stronger argument and analysis. We might take a quptation anf work through the technique, meaning and effect and connection to the broader theme before turning those ideas into a well -structured paragraph.

Ultimately, effective tutoring is about adapting. The goal isnt simply to help students get the right answer, its to find the teaching stratgy that helps ach student to understand how to get there themselves, whether thats in Maths or english and also for any age!
