Choosing HSC Subjects

The end of Year 10 is the time where the daunting decision of picking your subjects for Yr11 and Yr12 comes around. It might feel like this decision will define your school life over the next two years and into your post schooling education. Although these choices can be important, the subjects that you choose do not specify exactly how your future will look.

For example, at the end of year 10, I picked Chemistry as one of my subjects and was really excited about it. After 1 week in that class I realised that it was not the subject for me and swapped PDHPE instead. This choice led me to PDHPE being my favourite subject for those final two years and studying Exercise Physiology at University due to my love for it. Lots of people I know made similar decisions, after a a month, or a year, realising that they did not love the subject and they have the option to change or drop it.

This flexibility means that the decisions you make right now are not final. If you come to the realisation that a subject is not for you, you are able to change your mind.

Additionally, although it can be great for the subjects that you choose to relate to what you want to do in the future, it is not essential. Universities often have no perquisites and assume you do not know any specific knowledge when you start. This means that they will teach you everything you need to know when you get there.

So, I would recommend to pick the subjects you are passionate about and think you will enjoy. This makes it easier to study and school a more positive experience. You are always able to change your mind if needed and your choices won't define what you are able to do in the future.
