Building confidence in younger students

Tutoring often prioritises the academic progress and development of our students. However, as tutors we have a responsibility that goes beyond test scores, we have the opportunity to help build and instill a sense of confidence and independence in our students that can be applied across a multitude of situations. By creating a comfortable and encouraging learning environment in the tutoring space, students may feel more confident to ask questions and make mistakes. As tutors, we can remind our students that mistakes are a natural part of learning, allowing for resilience to develop and challenges to be viewed as opportunities for growth. This is especially important for younger students, who may be struggling with schoolwork or comparing themselves to their peers, making learning feel overwhelming. By ensuring the tutoring environment is positive and welcoming, the student's attitudes towards their academic studies can be strongly benefited.

Building confidence in our students does not require big breakthroughs or high marks. It is the individual progress, and the small wins that make the biggest difference. When a tutor puts the time and energy into knowing their students and targeting their weaknesses, it allows for a supportive relationship where the tutor and student work together to overcome barricades, making those small achievements more significant and thus reinforcing their belief in themselves. Moreover, building confidence is about more than improving academic results. It is about supporting our students to develop the self-belief and resilience they need to approach new challenges with confidence and a positive mindset. By being a safe space for your student, especially in one-on-one tutoring, they will feel more empowered to attempt new challenges both with you and on their own. If your student has he belief in themselves that they are capable of finding the answer, then they will be able to apply this outside of their academic journey.
